Difficult Classical Hypothesis
your assessment seems a tad swayed by difficult=classical hypothesis…please allow me to cite some examples where there was no classical mudki/alaaps involved but the songs are just unsingable (at least i am yet to see anyone match the originals in either music competitions or cover albums):
1. Om Shanti Om - forget the whole song, just the “hey tumne kabhi kisi se pyaar kiya” has been attempted by many, but no one even comes (IMHO) within light years of KK’s throw and gusto (by comparison, songs like Main Hoon Jhumroo with ample yodelling is not that big a deal actually, testimony being several clones have done well attempting them, and the only difference remained Kishore’s regal baritone…but the rendition itselfcan be matched)
2. Aansoo Bhari Hai - agaiin, another seemingly easy number, but in reality impossible to match Mukesh’s pathos, ditto for Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein
3. Na Kisi Ki Aankh Ka/Lagta Nahin Hai (Lal Qila) - just impossible to recreate the magic
4. Aaj Mausam - again does not seem very difficult other than the scale, but the humming in the beginning itself is just too difficult, forget the arduous task of balancing the high pitch with the mellow softness and romanticism of Rafi through the entire song, esp. the antara ‘ae mere yaar, ae husnwale’ with Rafi’s astonishing mudki on ‘tere hawaale’
6. Kitne Sapne Kitne Armaan - let any audacious aspirant first get the ‘Ya Ya Yahoo’ right, then we can talk about the rest of the song
7. Ek Haseena Thi - ‘bewaafa yaar ne..’ hail Kishore, the highs ‘n lows in this composition are just a torture to young aspirants (or old)…no wonder in various competitions, people just eschew this by singing the rather uninspiring and mundane ‘ek din woh mile’…smart trick, eh!?
8. Tu Pukar Lo - Hemant-da’s aura in this song is quite unmatachable!
I will pass the baton on to Sam, Naresh-ji, Sachin, Archie-da and other astute HFM aficionados to take it from here..
